Take the Hint

Daily at  9:40AM & 7:40PM

When it comes to managing the little nuisances in life... it pays to Take The Hint!  A Worcester native, Karen Trainor now lives in Brimfield with her husband and three children.  Her "Take the Hint!" column has been running in area papers for the past 13 years.  Karen is a managing editor for two area newspapers and a freelance columnist.  Her hints can be heard twice daily on ORC-FM, Oldies 98.9!

Win an Overnight Getaway in Sturbridge at the Publick House!

Do you have a helpful hint or handy tip that has worked for you?  Why not share it with listeners of ORC-FM, Oldies 98.9?  Since Karen is in the business of dispensing tips, not inventing them (although she has thought up quite a few!), she's always looking for a great hint or idea to share!
E-mail Karen with your favorite tips!  Once a month, one "tipster" will be chosen at random to win an overnight stay with breakfast at the Publick House Historic Inn, in Sturbridge, MA!

Congratulations to Brian McNally of Leominster, MA whose name was drawn as winner for an Overnight Stay at the Publick House in Sturbridge.  He offered this great recycling tip:

"Here’s a hint I have been using for years which has multiple benefits.  I take used Brillo steel wool pads after they have reached their usefulness and soak them in a pail of water for a week.  I then use the rusty water and pads for my Rhododendrons and Azaleas bushes.  I pour the rusty water around the base of the plant and place the rusty pads near the roots. The rusty water and Brillo pads are an excellent source of iron for those plants that need it.
Another great use for these pads is on rusted garden tools, with a little white vinegar, it is an excellent cleaning combination. The abrasive pad with the vinegar takes off the rust."

Here's the latest "Take the Hint!" features from ORC-FM, Oldies 98.9:

Monday, Sept 20: De-shocking Experience
Is settling down to the computer or TV a shocking experience? Low humidity can cause static this time of year. Whip up an anti static spray by mixing two cups of water and one quarter cup each liquid fabric softener and household ammonia into a spray bottle. Simply spritz rugs & shoes, but NOT electronics!

Tuesday, Sept 21: Halt Headaches
The cure for a headache can be as close as your refrigerator. Drinking two glasses of Gatorade has been known to halt a headache in its tracks. Experts say most headaches, including "morning after" headaches are caused by mild dehydration, and Gatorade re-hydrates quickly.

Wednesday, Sept 22: Fresh Eggs
Want to know if your eggs are really fresh? Did you know the exact day a dozen eggs were washed and packed is on its carton? The three digit consecutive calendar date code is often above the “sell by” date. A carton packed on January 1 would read 001 and one packed on December 31 would read 365.

Thursday, Sept 23: Laugh and Live Longer
Did you ever wonder why you feel so good after a belly laugh? Laughing stimulates the production of seratonin, a natural anti-depressant. Laughing also improves lung capacity and oxygen levels in the blood. And medical researchers report laughter boosts the immune system.

Friday, Sept 24: Big Chill
Have a warm bottle of wine you want to serve right away but it should be cold? Mix water, ice and about a third of a cup of ordinary table salt in an ice bucket. In a little more than five minutes, the wine will be perfectly chilled and table ready!

Saturday, Sept 25: Win a Mini Getaway
Do you have an interesting hint or tip? Share your tips and your name will go into a monthly drawing for a fabulous mini-getaway for two at the Historic Publick House Inn in Sturbridge. Located on the town common, just minutes from the Mass Pike and Route 84. The Publick House Inn features the best in Yankee hospitality - here's your chance to indulge! Simply click on the email link above to send a hint direct! Remember, share your favorite hints and you could win an overnight stay at the Publick House. Good Luck!
